In his late teens, Phil moved to the south of France for three years to paint and there discovered the songs of Jacques Brel. He returned to England inspired to write and perform songs himself. Early public performances were scarce owing to nerves but by the mid nineties he had formed a band and began to regularly gig and develop as a performer.
